The case for a little friction
TL;DR
Not every interruption is a distraction. A deliberate pause or well-placed question can help a reader notice assumptions that a seamless interface would let pass.
Useful interruption has a shape: it is relevant, optional, and easy to return from. Friction is useful when the reader understands its purpose.
Leave the starting point visible and let the reader choose — that is the difference between a deepening tangent and a lost thread.
